BRIEF HISTORY
1957
Nuova 500 presented at the Turin motor show. Powered by a 479 cc air-cooled twin-cylinder engine producing 13.5 hp. Capable of 85 km/h. No hubcaps, fixed windows, full sun-roof and suicide doors.
1958
Power output increased to 15 hp, "Super" model appears. "Sport" model appears in July, 499.5 cc engine producing 21.5hp and 105 km/h. New Fiat 500 model appears at the Paris motor show. Improvements include chrome hubcaps and wind-up windows.
1959
All models available with smaller sun-roofs. Round parking/indicator lights under the headlamps introduced in December.
1960
The Nuova 500 becomes the 500 D. 499.5cc engine producing 17.5 hp. Rear seat now folds down.
1961
Windscreen wipers now park automatically.
1963
Front seat-belt fixing points introduced.
1965
500 F introduced. Doors now open towards the front of the car. New rear light clusters. Power increased to 18 hp (95km/h). Chrome strips on side (waist) discontinued.
1968
500 L introduced. New interior, new instrument cluster (from Fiat 850), steering wheel (sporty/black), reclining front seats and full carpeting. Chrome crash bars on bumpers; new badge on front of car.
1972
500R introduced with the new Fiat badge (FIAT written in full)) on the front, Fiat 126 wheels and the "old style" dashboard and instrument cluster (black). Produced up to 1975. |
